Depends: It would depend on the condition of the rest of your mouth. I would suggest seeing a dentist who is willing to explain the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Root canal!: Your second molar not only provides support the first molar, but it helps in the chewing process, by compacting the food against the lower molar. By removing it, you are weakening the first upper molar, and rendering the lower molar pretty useless. All the chewing forces then will be redirected to the remaining molars. A hot tooth should be easily handled by an endodontist.
