Root canal!: Your second molar not only provides support the first molar, but it helps in the chewing process, by compacting the food against the lower molar. By removing it, you are weakening the first upper molar, and rendering the lower molar pretty useless. All the chewing forces then will be redirected to the remaining molars. A hot tooth should be easily handled by an endodontist.
