I've had pretty good success treating poison ivy/oak with an OTC product called Zanfel. You need to follow the directions completely and carefully and if so, it can clear the reaction in 2 days or less. The biggest benefit is that the itching stops immediately. It's a little expensive but worth it and avoids steroids.
