Depends.: Depends upon age. VIt D deficiency in children produces Rickets - a marked softening of the bones with bone pain and "bow legs." Other Sx include motor delay, poor growth, and increased susceptibility to infections. In adults Vit D deficiency generally causes no symptoms but if severe and protracted causes bone pain, fractures, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking.

Osteomalacia: Hi. In adults, the most serious problem from vitamin D deficiency is osteomalacia, poor bone mineralization. Vitamin D also has receptors in many other tissues besides bone. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased fall risk, and possibly heart disease as well. My advise to patients is keep your 25(OH)vitamin D level mid-30's or higher. Good luck!
