Depends: You can certainly be helpful without eating either as long as your diet is balanced otherwise. Soy is almost as good as animal protein in term of nutritional value (lacking B12 however) but is no better than many other protein sources either. At one time, soy was touted to be preventative of breast cancer but now the opposite may be true. The best answer is moderation and balance in nutrition
