I have had my mirena (levonorgestrel) for a almost 5 1/2 years. is it unsafe to wait 6 more months when i can get insurance to cover a new one?

No: If you are trying to prevent unwanted pregnancy then it's best to leave the Mirena in for the next six months. In the USA the Mirena has FDA approval for 5 years but studies show that it can last for 7 years. In fact, it is approved for 7 years in some European countries.
