I have neck pain, and when i stretch my neck from side to side it makes a popping noise. stretching helps with the pain, but what is that noise?

From the facets.: The vertebrae of the back have facets which keep everything in line. Sometimes the facets are not completely smooth and they make tiny noises when you turn your head.They are of no importance

Benign: The popping is almost invariably benign, similar to cracking your knuckles. In older patients, popping can also be from arthritis/degeneration. If your symptoms persist, it would be reasonable to get x-rays and MRI to evaluate whether there's any worrisome underlying pathology.
