Muscular: With a negative CT scan, I think we can be assured that your pain is muscular or in the costochondral joints which attach your ribs to your sternum (and would not show up on CT). When you breathe, you're using intercostal muscles and flexing these joints. If you search diligently, you may be able to find trigger points by compressing different areas when they hurt. Ibuprofen and naproxen may help.
