Yes: Elastics can be very effective in getting proper movement. You likely have some asymmetry that the orthodontist is adjusting. If your not sure what they are doing or trying to achieve, however, ask them-- you should always be clear about what your treatment is.

Yep: Orthodontists use elastics to provide directional force, gently nudging the teeth in a particular direction. Your Orthodontic Specialist has good reason for choice of elastic size (and the amount of force produces) as well as the direction i which they are to be worn. Ask your Orthodontist to describe to you what he/she is trying to accomplish. Remember, elastics only work when they are worn.
