Needs evaluation: The most common cause for a low potassium is being on a diuretic (water pill). If you have a potassium of 2.7 and have not been on a diuretic, you need an evaluation, as this is highly abnormal. Problems with overproduction of adrenal hormones can cause this. There are some rare kidney problems that can do this. Also, chronic diarrhea.
