No: It is the most common cause of Hypothyroidism. It is autoimmune disease that has antibodies directed against the thyroid gland causing chronic damage to the thyroid gland leading to Hypothyroidism. There are other less common causes

Not really: Hashimotos is autoimmune destruction of the thyroid. Some people have very little of this and the thyroid can still function normally. When hashimotos leads to enough destruction of the thyroid then people need replacement with synthroid (thyroxine). When people need thyroid replacement then they are hypothyroid. Hope this helps.
