Seek urgent care/ER: The major symptoms of a spontaneous pneumothorax are sudden onset of chest pain and/or shortness of breath. It usually doesn't require emergency treatment unless so much air collects in the chest that the heart and major blood vessels are compressed. Such a tension pneumothorax requires prompt removal of air from the pleural space. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000087.htm
