I have a gum pocket on the outside of one of my molars. a wisdom tooth is starting to surface behind it. could the wisdom tooth be causing the pocket?

Yes: You are correct, as a wisdom tooth erupts into the mouth, it can create a pocket in the gum, especially if the wisdom tooth is erupting abnormally. This pocketing may or may not be a problem that should be examined by a professional. It could be at risk for food impaction and subsequent infection. Have a professional provide a oral exam and explain your options and any risks. Good luck :)

Cause of pocket: The pocket may have uncovered the developmental cyst that the wisdom tooth was developing in. The cause of the pocket is more of a concern. Popcorn hull and tiny seeds can get under the gum and cause an abscess. Best to get the area checked out by your dentist.
