Superinfection: Colds, or upper respiratory infections, are most commonly cause by viral infections which resolve on their own in 3-7 days. Viral infections do NOT respond to antibiotics. However, when your immune system is taxed by fighting the viral infection, bacterial infections can set in. Symptoms that do not improve within a few days, worsening symptoms, new fever, or chest pain warrants a doctor visit

NotNecessarily: If your child is otherwise acting okay, and staying hydrated it is fine to observe. Persistent sore throat, if fever lasts more than 3 days, of the color of the mucus changes, if any shortness of breath/wheezing/distress occurs then you need to take them to their doctor or the ED.
