A member asked:

70 year old woman, diabetic and hypertension. implications of acute lacunar infarct in left thalmus. what does it signify and what is the treatment.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Stroke.: The infarct is a stroke. Her age, hypertension and diabetes are risk actors for that stroke. But I would have to say that at age 80 her risk is primarily driven by her age. The treatment would be to keep her BP and blood glucose as close to normal as possible. She should also be on an anti platelet agent - either clopidogrel, aspirin/dipyridamole or aspirin - to reduce chance of recurrence.
