Dryness or virus: When the surface of the cornea (the window that lets light in the eye front) gets disturbed then there can be significant pain and light sensitivity. This can be caused by dryness building up overnight or by an early virus infection settling in on the cornea. If the eye is red, and the vision is disturbed more than one hour after awakening, then you should consult with your ophthalmologist.
