Sore throat: Spots on the soft palate that turn into blister and then pop open to form ulcers are not the usual causes of sore throat (which affects the tonsils). At this time of the year, they are often caused by viruses (Enteroviruses). They can be very painful and usually affects children. rarely they can be due to other things: gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.

Virus: In people less than 45 who are non-smokers, the vastly most common cause for sore throat +/- oral pain is a self-limiting infection caused by a virus. Sometimes tonsillitis can be caused by a bacteria that requires an antibiotic - especially if you are aboriginal/Torres Strait Is/Maori/Pacific Is (because of risk for developing Rheumatic Fever).
