Osmotic laxative: Osmotic laxatives work in bulk to pull more water into the large intestine to keep the stool soft. They tend to be very gentle but results will take a little time (days). Other laxatives are bowel irritants - and they do just that. They cause irritation that causes the bowels to increase activity to force a bowel movement. Long term use of irritant laxatives can cause significant problems
