A corn or the start: A "bunion" is a street term for hallux valgus, an angular deformity of the great toe that makes a prominence on the inner aspect of the foot. A "corn" is a thicken of the skin or a bony prominence of one of the lesser toes usually due to a deformity (commonly a hammertoe) or a ill fitting shoe. A "soft corn" develops in the space between the 4th and 5th toe. See a ortho/podiatric doc

Corns and Bunions: Hi Jane! Corns are basically dead skin that accumulates on the top of the toe which is a result of something rubbing against it such as the shoes. A bunion is a bony deformity where the big toe starts to shift towards the second toe. As the progression continues, you will notice a bump develop on the side of the foot near the big toe.

Big difference: A corn is simply a build up with keratotic/thick skin, usually overlying a joint or bone prominence. A bunion is a prominence of bone at the large toe joint (metatarsal phalangeal joint). Your toes are probably inflamed from the toes becoming irritated by tight shoes. If the pain persists, a professional evaluation should be scheduled.
