Typical Childhood : Absence Epilepsy usually begins between age 4-10. The typical EEG pattern during a seizure is generalized. Most kids with have normal cognition & learning, some have normal cognition & diminished verbal & visual memory & executive functions, collecting, organizing & using information. Neurodevelopmental disorders with a genetic basis underlie CAE & cognitive or language impairment in some kids.

Research is underway: Absence seizures are a form of generalized seizures. Research studies have demonstrated that they may be initiated by widespread cortical ares (frontal and parietal lobes) and propagated to subcortical regions (thalamus).
