Radicular pain: This pattern of pain is following the distribution of the intercostal nerve. There is one nerve beneath each rib and comes out in the back and goes forward. You need to be evaluated by a physician to make sure that you do not have cervical vertebral injuries or abnormalities. sometimes this may happen before a flare up of shingles (if this is the case you may see a rash in the same area soon)
