Recommended: There are many good reasons for having your teeth professionally cleaned. To keep your teeth clean, remove stains, to prevent gingivitis, to have whiter more attractive teeth and improve your general health. It's actually safe when performed according to current standards by your dentist or dental hygienist.

Not at all: Actually that is a part of your semiannual checkup and cleaning includes stain removal. These are surface stains that should be removed to maintain healthy teeth.

Usually not: If the black stains comes off with a cleaning, it is not damaging your enamel. It's only damaging when it does not come off with a cleaning and you need to have a filling to replace the black stain that is removed.

Stains: Removing stains is not harmful to the enamel . Stains can be caused by diet- coffee, tea, smoking etc. If the stain is around existing fillings, they may need to be smoothed or replaced. Having your teeth cleaned more frequently can reduce the amount of stain as well.
