Potassium chloride: you should sit for a while and drink a full glass of water after taking potassium. The potassium could get stuck and irritate the the esophagus

Protection: Although I haven't heard of this precaution it might have to do with protecting your esophagus from being irritated by the medication if it lodges in your esophagus. Sitting up would make it easier for the medication to progress into the stomach.
