Depends where?: What area of the body are they doing an open biopsy? This is important. If it's superficial, you may not need general anesthesia at all, but if it's deeper, in an organ, then the anesthesiologist, and surgeon will determine what's safest and most comfortable for the patient. If uncomplicated, even MAC anesthesia can be used. Need more info to assist. Thanks!

Yes it can: Depending on the location and how superficial the node is, it can be done with local anesthetics with or without sedation , or a regional nerve block, spinal, epidural etc. most are actually don without GA.
