Check for Gout: Gout is a type of arthritis. Gout can cause an attack of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint, generally a big toe. These attacks may occur over and over unless gout is treated. Too much uric acid in the blood causes gout. You should get this checked out by your doctor who may take a sample of fluid from your joint and do a blood test.

It's possible...: Gout presents externally with a VERY red and warm (not to mention painful) big toe joint. There is usually swelling as well. It's best to see a doctor for evaluation and treatment.

Have it tested....: Why wonder. It could be any one of a hundred things and gout is only one. The diagnosis is based on history, visual, microscopic and a blood text. Remove all doubt and find out.
