Not necessarily: Some people choose to live with an inguinal hernia if it is not causing them too much discomfort. What you need to know is that if the hernia becomes hard, painful and not reducible (you can't push it back in) then you need to go to the emergency department as soon as possible as this is a surgical emergency.

It depends: No. The consensus now is that asymptomatic to minimally symptomatic inguinal hernias can be safely observed with no increase in morbidity. Repair is recommended for symptomatic hernias or hernias associated with complications (obstruction, perforation).
