Medicine wearing off: It is possible that the atenolol is wearing off by morning, especially if you take it in the morning. In that case, you could be getting something called rebound tachycardia. If the rate around 100 is every morning, you may need to switch to twice daily dosing or a similar medication. I suggest you see your doctor regarding this. Do NOT change the dose of the atenolol on your own though.

Dose titration.: It's good that u stopped drinking, & I hope there is no lasting damage. I gather that atenolol was started for hypertension (tendency towards high BP). What was your BP in the morning when your HR was 100? If atenolol is dosed properly, your resting HR should be around 60. A doc can up your dose, provided your BP does not go too low. Talk to your doctor about the dosing and get your BP checked. GL
