Molecular biology: I'm not a molecular biologist, but I surmise that a pro-inflammatory mediator is a protein or molecule that is involved in the inflammation, i.e. the cascade of events leading to redness, pain, warmth, irritation, & swelling at the site of injury. Pre-inflammatory mediators are inactive proteins present in the body which, when activated, either slow down or speed up the inflammatory process.
