Nasal decongestant: Sometimes adding a nasal decongestant such as otc Afrin improves delivery of other nasal medications. The Afrin can be used for 3-5 days at the same time as the regular nasal medication. If used longer, there can be risk of rebound congestion. Also, be sure to use saline irrigation to keep nasal mucosa moist. Finally, avoid those allergens (eg. using dust mite impermeable bedding covers)

Nasal sprays not OTC: For seasonal allergies, the most effective options are the steroid or antihistamine nasal sprays, available by prescription. Not only do they work the best, but they are technically local therapy as negligible amounts enter the bloodstream. Afrin nasal spray can cause rebound symptoms, which the prescription versions do not.
