Your genetic material is contained in 23 pairs of chromosomes in each of your cells (except eggs and sperm, which have only 23 chromosomes each). There are two types of chromosomes: autosomes (chromosomes 1 through 22) and sex chromosomes (X and Y). Sex-linked disorders are caused by mutations in sex chromosomes. Non-sex-linked disorders are caused by mutations in autosomes.
