Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Effusion: Joint swelling occurs from excess joint fluid which can be in response to injury or infection. In those w/bleeding conditions, swelling could be due to blood in joint. The fact that your knee feels warm & painful even w/o touch means that you need to be evaluated immediately. The ER doc will put a needle into your knee to drain fluid for analysis. S/he can then start antibiotics if appropriate

Get checked.: See an orthopedic knee specialist. Swelling indicates a problem within the structures of the knee joint. Hard to say what may be causing it, until you get it checked.
