The herpes-simplex virus lies dormant in the nerve roots of the spinal canal after the first infeciton, which usually occurs in childhood. Most people have it, but not all develop cold sores. Some things that may trigger the cold sore are chapped lips or sunburned lips. So wear lipgloss with sunscreen.

Relax: It's relatively common. Off course you can get married,have kids, and continue life. You just don't kiss or contact other mucous membranes when you have the lesions. There are medications your physician can give you during an outbreak as well.
