Carbamazepine: is an anticonvulsant medication used for the management of certain types of Epilepsy, mood disorders and atypical facial pain. It requires time to work for these conditions and is usually monitored by blood level along with monitoring of blood count and sodium levels. Although it is not used to modify the disease course in MS it can help with any of the these conditions that may result from MS

Trigeminal neuralgia: Perhaps your doctor was thinking you might have trigeminal neuralgia. This medicine is often used to prevent the pain of this condition. It does not cause jaw pain. Some people feel relief sooner than 2 weeks with this medicine. Other treatments may be gabapentin, tramadol, and amitriptyline, when this medicine does not help.

Confusing sequence: If you have MS, you need to be taking a disease modifying agent, and carbamazepine is NOT such a drug. It is used for epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, and other neuralgic conditions including post-herpetic neuralgia. Jaw pain is not a side effect of the drug. A repeat visit to your doctor ASAP is needed.
