Trigeminal neuralgia: Perhaps your doctor was thinking you might have trigeminal neuralgia. This medicine is often used to prevent the pain of this condition. It does not cause jaw pain. Some people feel relief sooner than 2 weeks with this medicine. Other treatments may be gabapentin, tramadol, and amitriptyline, when this medicine does not help.

Confusing sequence: If you have MS, you need to be taking a disease modifying agent, and carbamazepine is NOT such a drug. It is used for epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, and other neuralgic conditions including post-herpetic neuralgia. Jaw pain is not a side effect of the drug. A repeat visit to your doctor ASAP is needed.
