Yes: Many screening programs use the carotid artery as there bench mark for atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is generalized and if it is in the carotid it is in other vessels.

Yes: Ultrasound of the carotid arteries is a very good method to detect vascular disease. This test can diagnose a spectrum of problems from intimal thickening to marked cholesterol deposits (plaque). Disease of the carotid arteries often serves as an indicator of arterial disease elsewhere.
