My gp ordered a doppler ultrasound to look at my 'porta hepatis' - what could he be checking for?

Blood vessels: do you have any underlying liver disease? unusual to just start checking the vasculature in the liver - but the dopplers would make sure there is no portal vein thrombosis (blood clot) or hepatic artery stenosis (could happen after surgery). what's going on with your liver?

Portal vein: doppler ultrasound of the liver was ordered to look at the portal vein, hepatic vein and inferior vena cava ( these are all veins around the liver). I assume your GP wants to rule out thrombus (clot) inside the vein.

Liver: Porta hepatis is the region leading into the liver which contains the blood vessels feeding the liver (hepatic artery and portal vein) and the bile duct which carries bile from the liver and gallbladder to the bowel. It also contains some lymph nodes. Maybe your doctor wants to see how well blood is flowing in the hepatic artery and portal vein?
