Dysmenorrhea: Endometriosis and fibroids are two of the most common causes of dysmenorrhea (painful periods). Other common causes are ovarian cysts, varicose veins in the pelvis or something similar to endometriosis in the muscle of the uterus, called adenomyosis. Often, birth control pills and/or Ibuprofen are sufficient to minimize the pain. If those do not work, have an evaluation by a gynecologist.

Both: Both fibroids and endometriosis could cause those symptoms. The likelihood that the fibroids are causing the pain does depend on the size, number and locations of fibroids. Many women have both fibroids and endometriosis. So it can sometimes be hard to tell. Both fibroids and endometriosis may respond to some of the same types of medical therapies and/or surgical therapies which is helpful.
