Surveillance: Meloxicam is relatively safe, it is safer on the stomach than ibuprofen for ulcers, but if you have stomach upset or heartburn symptoms on it, stop it and call MD. A check on your kidneys is advised at least once a year as well. It is not an addictive/habit forming drug.

Monitor by doctor: All pain-killers have side effects. Meloxicam is a non-steroidal whose main long- term side effects are stomach irritation (that can cause bleeding) and kidney damage ( that is often reversed when the drug is stopped. You need to see your physician periodically (every 2 mo) to check you and do tests to monitor for side effects

Consider Acupuncture: You could work with an acupuncturist to see if it decreases your pain. If it does then the acupuncturist could teach you which points to stimulate yourself with magnets or acupressure at home in between sessions. If this works you may be able to decrease the amount of pain medication you need for relief and this helps decease the side effects.
