Sometimes: Hospitals can choose not to charge, and many either offer a discount or a sliding scale based upon income. An ER must do a screening exam and stabilize emergencies regardless of ability to pay. That being said, they have rendered expensive services in most cases, and have a right to expect payment for the time, expertise, and equipment used. Hope this helps!
