Cell metabolism: All drugs affect metabolic pathways in one way or another, especially when taken in large doses, and can interfere with cell reproduction or chemical processes. Areas of the body that have high activity, including the bone marrow, skin cells, intestine and liver are more likely to be affected, and monitoring the WBC and lipids can give some indication of it's general affect on the body.

Effects bone marrow: Accutane has a long list of side effects, some potentially serious, involving many organ systems, which is why close monitoring by qualified physicians is mandatory for its use. Listed side effects are all within the spectrum of these adverse reactions, due to suppression of bone marrow. The good news is that most of these changes are temporary and return to normal after drug discontinuation.
