Sharp, stabbing: What you are describing is neuropathic pain, the first thing that comes to mind when a patient describes this type of pain on the right of the ribs depending on how the pain distribution spreads out is shingles. I would follow up closely with your doctor about getting treatment as soon as possible assuming your doctor agrees with the diagnosis. Tylenol (acetaminophen) in the meantime to help you with the pain.
