Sometimes: This is a test that is done to look at the elasticity and the fat content of your liver. It is often done in combination with blood work. It is my understanding if your liver is normal or if there is a severe problem the test is reliable. It may not be as good for in between cases. It does avoid the more invasive test of a liver biopsy. Obese or patients with abdominal fluid are not candidates.

An option vs. biopsy: Study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3594956 & http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24913657 for reasonable overviews, including limitations; fat or water (ascites) in the way of Fibroscan, akaTransient Elastography & look it up on http://scholar.google.com. While not the long accepted standard, it is certainly safer than liver biopsy. Many additional reviews are on the web.
