Yes: Nowadays, episiotomies are not "standard" with every delivery. The American College of Ob/Gyn recommends they be done when indicated, e.g. baby's fetal heart rate is low and the doctor wants to expedite delivery or is worried the baby might get stuck in the birth canal. I do quite a few deliveries every month, and I only cut an episiotomy once every 30-40 deliveries. But yes, numbing is essentia
