Not hormonal: GERD is due to reflux of stomach acid and contents into the esophagus causing heartburn. It can be due to a lax esophageal sphincter or a hiatus hernia. Pregnancy often aggravates this as the stomach gets larger and increases pressure, or by obesity,or lying flat or tight belts such as seat belts, etc. It is best treated with a proton pump blocker such as Prilosec no large meals or at bedtime.
