Still safe : Many things cause low platelets. This includes medications, autoimmune problems, a large spleen, or problems with the bone marrow. Without more information, I can't tell you what might be wrong with your dad. But I can tell you he is not at risk of bleeding unless his platelets fall below 20,000. With more than 80,000, he is safe. I hope his doctors figure this out soon!
