SSRIs: Many of the medications that we think of as antidepressants also work to treat anxiety. The major class is Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, SSRIs, like prozac, citalopram, paxil (paroxetine). Tricyclic antidepressants may help. In some cases medications like gabapentin or seroquel may be used. All of these take time to work. Hydroxyzine is an unusual one that may work quickly and is not addicting

Benadryl (diphenhydramine): Hydroxyzine is more sedating that anxiety-breaking, if you will. Good for sleep just like any other sedating antihistamine. For anxiety in general, meaning 24/7 control, there are better options. Speak to your doctor about the non-tranquilizer type of medications available.
