SSRIs: Many of the medications that we think of as antidepressants also work to treat anxiety. The major class is Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, SSRIs, like prozac, citalopram, paxil (paroxetine). Tricyclic antidepressants may help. In some cases medications like gabapentin or seroquel may be used. All of these take time to work. Hydroxyzine is an unusual one that may work quickly and is not addicting

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is: similar but Beta Blockers also work speak with your doctor about it

Benadryl (diphenhydramine): Hydroxyzine is more sedating that anxiety-breaking, if you will. Good for sleep just like any other sedating antihistamine. For anxiety in general, meaning 24/7 control, there are better options. Speak to your doctor about the non-tranquilizer type of medications available.

Possibly: Hydroxyzine is modestly helpful for anxiety. However one of the ssri meds (liek zoloft (sertraline) or lexapro) has more longterm benefit and safety.

See below: 1. Yes, it can be prescribed for anxiety, particularly the pamoate form of it. 2. It is not really possible to compare it strength-wise to benzos, as they are completely different drug classes. It is a good idea to try Hydroxyzine first, as it is not addicting like benzos are, and actually works well for a lot of people. 3. As i said above, it is not addicting, so generally safe for long-term use.

Due to work overload my Dr. has recommended that I take 20 mg tablets of Hydroxyzine as needed for anxiety . Is this considered a high dosage BID?

Not at all: In fact this is a rather low dose, but sometimes it is better to start of with low doses and titrate up to make sure you tolerate the medication. Remember this medication can be sedating.

Yes, but: tolerance may develop, meaning that you would have to increase the dose to get the same desired effect, keep the follow up with your doctor/psychiatrist though, you will be fine, best wishes
