Asthma?: Hi. Suffocating is a sense of difficulty breathing, and is not generally related to difficulty swallowing. Does anything trigger the suffocating feeling (viral illnesses, smoke, animal hair, etc)? Can you hear any wheezing when you breathe? I'd suggest you talk with your doctor and see if spirometry is indicated as a diagnostic test and/or a bronchodilator as a therapeutic trial. Good luck.

Airway issues: There are a large number of conditions that can cause changes in your throat and difficulty swallowing. However if you are having breathing difficulty I suggest you go to an emergency room to get your airway evaluated and to get treatment to help the breathing.
