Reflux causing cough: Coughing occurs because the gastric contents are refluxed back up the esophagus and spill onto the larynx (voice box) which because irritated and tries to protect your airway by forcefully expelling the irritant out of the lung. One of the functions of the larynx is to protect the airway and it does it by stimulating the cough reflex when there has been an aspiration.

GERD: Chronic cough can be caused either by acid reflux or sometimes by the reflux of non-acidic stomach contents. It is a non-productive cough that occurs mostly when awake and upright.
