Depends: On which test you are talking about. Ideally, if he is off of medications(as in the metformin) you'd like to see your husbands hgba1c(three month average blood sugar) below 6.4(this is the upper limit of "prediabetes"). If you are talking about a fasting glucose, you'd like to see it below 126. Though some doctors still use medications like metformin in the prediabetes range.

Normal blood sugar: Type 2 diabetes can be managed with diet and exercise. As long as his fasting glucose is in the normal range and his hemoglobin A1c is normal he doesn't need the oral medication. He should normalize the labs before stopping the medications. He should also have his labs checked frequently by his doctor to make sure he stays normal.
