Yes: Patients can lose vision due to very large areas of retinal loss without active blood vessel growing into these areas in the central macular area (this is called geographic atrophy-dry age related macular degeneration or "dry amd"). The retina appears to slowly wither away. Conversely, central macular area degeneration can occur from active blood vessel growing into these areas called "wet amd".
