Dead tissue: Dry gangrene refers to dead (necrotic) tissue that is not infected with microbes. The area may look black with a red, painful, warm border. Wet gangrene is moist, necrotic tissue that is infected with a variety of microbes that can produce nasty smelling gasses. Of course, wet gangrene is worse than dry.
