Doc prescribed xanax (alprazolam) as needed for panic attacks. taking 0.25mg once a week on avg. is this a long term solution? want to avoid ssri if possible.

Depends: Most panic attacks have an identifiable cause. Do you know what causes panic attack? Was your physician able to identity it? Xanax, (alprazolam) SSRI or similar medicine may control symptoms but can't cure cause. I agree with you not to use medication unless absolutely needed to control acute symptoms. Psychotherapy & behavioral modification such as desensitization is better than medicine alone.
